Flying With Equipment
When filming in a foreign location, be that a hop across to Ireland or further or Italy or India there are a number of things you can do to make your experience traveling with equipment easier, cheaper and safer.
Depending on where in the world you will be flying, if its not an internal flight then a customs import and export fee may be required when you land. However many counties operate under a temporary export list known as a carnet to avoid this. Counties that do not operate the carnet scheme will have their own requirements on what must be provided in order to avoid an import charge on equipment. In most cases a full list of the equipment traveling which details is serial number, manafacturer and country of origin will be needed. If this is your own equipment it is easy to create this list yourself and if you are hiring in equipment you will be able to ask for the equipment details for a carnet in advance. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the right documentation for equipment when traveling.
There are a number of companies that are specialists in creating carnet documents and ensuring they are stamped and valid for use in your intended country. For more information about ATA Carnets and what equipment needs one, how to get them and more visit the HRMC or London Chamber of Commerce websites.

Flying with Batteries
There are a number of rules when it comes to flying with Lithium Ion batteries which are most commonly used to power cameras. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has a section dedicated to this and is worth reading prior to travel. It’s also advisable to check with your airline directly about the limits they impose on size and packing details for batteries. In some cases prior approval must be sought prior to departure.
